Our Farming Story
Raised in the Hertfordshire countryside, Regan Upton has always been drawn to farming. At 12, with lots of help and encouragement from mum, Leah, he started taking pet lambs home from the farm he helped on, rearing them in the back garden and discovered a real passion for livestock & farming. By 15, and with the support of local farming friends, Regan bought his first Hereford cow and calf. Without land of his own, he was lucky enough to keep his starter herd on a nearby farm while he slowly built up his numbers and experience. As more grazing became available, Regan expanded the herd, purchased his own stock bull and, in 2020, registered a pedigree Hereford herd under the prefix Bullbeggars with the Hereford Cattle Society. From the beginning, our Beef and Lamb has been sold direct to our loyal customer base, which has built up over the last 10 years.
Our farming system
Now & the Future
Our farming system is simple: cattle and sheep raised on grasses, herbs, legumes and brassicas with as little extra feed and fuss as possible. Our Hereford cattle graze green Hertfordshire pastures, maturing slowly and naturally. They are housed for the worst months of winter, also calving at this time. Our ewes lamb outside in April and are never housed, with little to no hard feed brought in. This keeps food miles extremely low and makes full use of our grass. The lambs spend all summer thriving and maturing on grass and their mothers’ milk, which produces tender, deeply flavoured meat with real provenance. Our sheep spend the winter months grazing cover crops on neighbouring arable farms, giving our ground a good rest. Moving forward Regan has big plans in place for his enterprise and is always looking for grazing or share farming agreements, primarliy where sheep & cattle can be used to reduce reliance on artificial chemicals and fertilisers.
